The Cornet’s Lass for 2012 is Gillian Fiona Smith (25), of Moss View, Clarilaw, Hawick. Gillians parents are Ex Cornet and lass Tommy and Marion Smith, 1982. Gillian is one of three daughters, Lesley the eldest is the proprietor of The Honey Pot, Hawick and Alison is the youngest.
Gillian attended Wilton Primary School and Hawick High School. On leaving school Gillian had various office jobs before working in the Halifax Bank. After a few years she decided to broaden her horizons and travelled to New Zealand and Australia. On returning to Hawick 3 years ago Gillian joined NHS Borders and the team at Hawick Dental Centre as a receptionist where she still currently works and thoroughly enjoys.
The Common Riding has been an important part of Gillian’s upbringing, she has attended rideouts with her family and friends all of her life. Gillian started riding at a young age and rode at her first rideout at Selkirk Common Riding at the age of 9. Gillian and her horse Maisy followed to Bonchester in 2004 and she has been a keen follower with her sister Alison ever since. Gillian’s other hobbies include swimming and keeping fit, she loves to go shopping and socialising with her friends.
Gillian is lucky she has her mum, dad and an extended common riding family to give her plenty of words of advice. She is very close to her parent’s Acting mother and father, Alison and Wullie Gray and their family and she hopes she will do them all proud. She is looking forward to seeing Ross and Roy carrying the Ancient Banner and following in her mum’s footsteps by bussing the flag.
Gillian wishes everyone a happy, sunny Common Riding for 2012!
