Cornet Ross John Nichol (22) of 13 Bailleul Grove, Hawick is the only son of Ex-Cornet Ian and Lesley Nichol. Ross has a younger sister Jenny (16), who is still currently at Hawick High School.
Ross attended Trinity Primary School and Hawick High. After leaving school he took up an apprenticeship at Lochpark with Richardson and Son, Printers. He has worked there now for four and a half years.
Ross first followed Cornet Steven Anderson in 2002 on a pony called Briar and gained his Junior Mosstroopers Badge the following year. He has followed every Cornet since and enjoys attending other Border Common-Ridings and Festivals.
The Cornet’s mount for this year’s Common-Riding is his own horse Roy, a 15 year old 16.3hh chestnut gelding. Roy, himself, is a Common-Riding regular, and has also carried the flag at Langholm in 2008.
Ross has various sporting interests. His main interest is rugby, being a former PSA player; he now plays in the back row for Hawick Harlequins, where he won ‘Player of the Year’ in his first season. Keen on the horse racing he supports the local flapping, and he is also a big Rangers fan and enjoys a day out at Ibrox to cheer on his side.
Ross’ appointment as Cornet 2012 is the realisation of a lifelong ambition and he is delighted to have been given such an honourable opportunity. He cannot wait to hear ‘the best band in the world’ arriving on Picking Night. He would like to take this opportunity, along with his family, to wish everyone a great Common Riding. ‘Let’s hope the sun shines’.
