Cornet 2011

CornetCornet Michael George Davidson (25) 17 O’Connell Street , Hawick is the only son of Mick and Elaine Davidson. Michael has a younger sister, Linzi (20) who is currently studying Property Development and Valuation at Napier University.

Michael attended Trinity Primary and Hawick High Schools. After leaving school he took up a joinery apprenticeship with John Rae but after a year decided to call it a day and pursue his love of horses and joined Greystoke trainer Nicky Richards and had the pleasure of looking after Scottish Champion Hurdler Noble Alan and Grade One chaser Money Trix to name but a few. In January this year Michael returned home and is currently working in the forestry industry for Selkirk company Eclipse Tree Surgery.

Michael first followed Cornet Rory Culton in 1993 on his pony called Rupert. He has been a keen follower ever since and also enjoys taking part in other Border Common Ridings and Festivals.

The Cornet’s mount for this year’s Common Riding will be ‘Storm’ a 16 year old, 17.2 h.h. dark bay gelding. Storm is a Common Riding regular and carried the flag at Langholm Common Riding last year.

Michael has various sporting interests. His main interest is horse racing and was lucky enough to experience all the big meetings during his time working in the sport including Cheltenham, Aintree and Leopardstown. His other main interest is rugby, a former captain of Hawick Wanderers, he also had spells with Hawick Trades and Hawick Harlequins. He also represented the Borders at various age groups. Tottenham Hotspur is Michael’s football team and he travelled to Wembley to watch them win the Carling Cup a few years ago.

Michael is delighted to be appointed Hawick Cornet for the Year 2011 and follow in the long list of illustrious Cornets that have gone before. He cannot wait to carry the ‘Banner Blue’ and lead the townsfolk in yet another great year. Along with his family he would like to wish Teries and visitors alike a glorious Common Riding.
