The Cornet's Acting Father and Mother for 2014 are Alan and Jane Gray. They have been married for 13 years and have three children Rebecca 10, Carly 8 and Oliver 3 who are keen supporters of the Common-Riding and are very excited for this year.
The Acting Father was born in Hawick in 1968 and attended Wilton School and Hawick High School. On Leaving school Alan Worked as a plumer/gas fitter with various firms and now works as a Clerk of Works for SBHA. He is also a retained firefighter.
Alan first followed Cornet David Brown in 1979 on a pony called Pinto, gained his Mosstroopers badge in the same year and has been a keen supporter ever since.
Alan had a long career in rugby including playing for the PSA, being selected for Scotland under 18 and 19 squds, playing for the Trades and Hawick. He was involved in cup and league winning sides for Hawick and then focused on the Sevens circuit where he captained Hawick for several seasons winning various tournaments including two Hawick winners medals. Alan also rode in the 1996 Tradesmen's Handicap. He now enjoys swimming, going to the gym and spending time with family and friends.
Acting Mother Jane was born in 1972 and has lived in Hawick since 1975 attending Drumlanrig School and Hawick High School. She worked in Haddon and Crowe, Solicitors on leaving School then changed career to Beauty Therapy which she studied at Telford College and owned her own salon on leaving college. She gained a Bachelor of Arts degree from Dundee University and has been a lecturer at Borders College for a number of years. She enjoys cycling, spending time with family and friends and is also a keen supporter of the Common-Riding.
Alan and Jane are very honoured and proud to be part of Ross and Michelle's very special year and wish them and everyone else a fantastic Common-Riding.
